Berries look so pretty and that is why they are usually used for seasoning to increase the beauty of any dish, but did you know that they are also good for your health? These are actually known as super fruit because of their exceptional health beneficial values.
Strengthen the Heart
Berries love your heart. If you have a spoonful of strawberries, then it helps to reduce the cholesterol level of the body remarkably. According to a recent survey, having strawberries daily causes a significant reduction in LDL (bad cholesterol). Those who have high LDL levels are more prone to oxidation, which is a chemical process that can damage the heart and arteries. An American study said that having strawberries lowers the LDL and total cholesterol in both men and women. Ladies having a berry-rich diet witnessed a 3.6% fall in total cholesterol and a 3.2% drop in LDL, and on the other hand, in men figures were 2.6% reduction in total cholesterol and 3.1% decrease in LDL.
Blood Pressure Regulation
Strawberries are a great source of potassium and so work wonderfully to regulate the blood pressure, which in turn relaxes the blood vessels in people suffering from hardening of the arteries. It protects the brain cells against damage, which can lead to stroke.
Berries are loaded with an ample amount of Vitamin C (strawberries are known to have more Vitamin C as compared to oranges). They also have fiber and folate, and possess unmatched disease fighting antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are plant chemicals that give strawberries their red ruby color. Anthocyanins lessen the inflammation that is a major symptom of many chronic diseases like cancer. These are also blessed with incomparable anti-aging properties that can repair and even protect the cells from unstable oxygen molecules known as free radicals. They curb the cancer cells and lessen the growth of tumor. In many experiments, strawberry compounds played an important role in treating leukemia, heart, lung and prostate cancer.
Antioxidants in strawberries
There are two more strawberry antioxidants named lupeol and ellagitannins. These work as effective anti- inflammatory and anti-carcinogens agents, especially for cervical and colon cancer. According to a recent research, if a person consumes a good amount of strawberries along with other fruits, then it restores about 20% of carcinogen damaged cells to normal.
Have Healthy Eyes
They also help in maintaining the health of the eyes. Having foods that have less amount of Glycaemic Index (GI) is a good way to maintain overall health as it controls excess weight gain. Studies done on aging say that a diet less in GI lessens the age related mascular degeneration (MD) by 17% as the low GI foods have high antioxidant content. Strawberries are the most preferred low GI foods. They have very less carbohydrates, so you can have a bowl full of strawberries without any hesitation. They also have zero impact over blood glucose and so are a delight for diabetics too.
