Gall Bladder Stones

To know more about gallbladder stones one needs to know what exactly is gallbladder. It is a small bag that is located right under the liver and stores bile that is formed by the liver. The bile present here helps in the digestion of fat that further moves from the gallbladder and enters the small intestine via bile duct or sometime called as cystic duct. These stones can vary from something as small as sand grains to as big as a golf ball. Most of the times, these stones never cause any trouble. But can be dangerous if a duct gets blocked due to them and might ask for a treatment.

What causes gallstones?

The stones are the hardened substance that occurs due to the chemicals that are present in the gallbladder. The chemicals mainly responsible for this is calcium carbonate, calcium bilirubinate and cholesterol. Imbalance of any of this can lead to formation of gallstones in the body and they can be mainly of two types:

  • Cholesterol gallstones– this is because of excess if cholesterol and people mainly in USA and UK suffer from this type of gallstones.
  • Pigment gallstones- Too much of bilirubin forms pigment gallstones. This type is quite common among the patients who are suffering from liver disease, blood disorder, bile tube is infected or suffering with sickle cell anemia.

Stones can also be formed if the bladder is not clear the way it is supposed to be. Overweight people who try to lose weight immediately suffer because of stones mainly.
